Manipur High Court Clears Hiring Freeze at Manipur University

Imphal: The Manipur High Court gave the green light to hire for 78 non-teaching roles at Manipur University. Chief Justice M. Sundar and Justice A. Guneshwar Sharma threw out a petition that tried to block the move. The case had stalled the recruitment process since February 2026.

Petitioners argued the university used unapproved rules to pick candidates. They demanded the court scrap the entire process. Judges dug into the Ministry of Education records on the SAMARTH portal and found the alleged rules simply were not there. The bench stated, "The so-called CRRs 2024, which formed the main basis of the challenge, did not exist in the official records of the university or on the portal."

The court vacated its previous stay order. Appointments can move forward now. While the immediate roadblock is gone, the judges left the door open for future fights over the validity of the 2022 recruitment rules. They also suggested the university try to place petitioner Wangkhem Ranjan in a vacant Peon or Multi-Tasking Staff role. All parties must pay their own legal bills.
