Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh confirmed a 5 crore budget to upgrade aging sports equipment. Much of the current gear dates back to the 1999 National Games. It no longer meets modern competitive standards. Athletes need better tools to compete.

Khemchand spoke at the Olympic Bhavan in Imphal during the International Olympic Day Run. He highlighted the state's sporting pedigree. He claimed that no Indian contingent in major international sporting events is complete “without Manipuri players”.

Home and Youth Affairs Minister Govindas Konthoujam joined the event. He pointed to the state's 19 Olympians as a major feat for a small population. The government is now scouting talent for the 2036 Olympic Games. Officials urged young athletes to stay disciplined, avoid drugs, and respect their coaches.

The Chief Minister also inspected the National Sports University. Construction on that campus is nearing the finish line. Beyond the track, Khemchand participated in a tree plantation drive to mark the day. He reminded the youth that sports teach perseverance beyond the medal stand.
