Manipur Athlete Irengbam Ritu Chanu Joins India's Commonwealth Games Team

Imphal: Irengbam Ritu Chanu is heading to Scotland. The Wheelchair Basketball Association, Manipur confirmed she will represent India in the 3x3 wheelchair basketball event at the Commonwealth Games. She is the first athlete from the state to reach this level in disability sports.

Ritu Chanu is currently at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Training Centre for Disability Sports in Gwalior. She will train there until July 20. The national team leaves Delhi for Glasgow on July 21. This marks her third time at a national coaching camp.

Financial hurdles nearly stopped her progress. WBAM President L. Dhaneshwor Singh stepped in to fund her participation. The association described the selection as a proud moment, stating it is "a proud milestone for both the State and the disabled sporting community."

Supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport to send her off. The association is now calling on the state government to increase support for para-athletes across Manipur.
