Imphal: A 54-year-old man died Friday morning after he fell into a pond in Imphal West’s Takyel Kolom Leikai. Wakongthem Jateshwor went into the water at 9 am to pick wild lotuses. He never came back up. Family members and neighbors searched the pond until the State Disaster Response Force arrived to help. Rescuers pulled his body from the water, but medical staff declared him dead at the scene.
Disaster struck again in Ukhrul town around midnight. A landslide hit a rented house at Khampasom, pinning four children under the debris. Neighbors pulled the victims from the collapsed structure and rushed them to the District Hospital. Nine-year-old Yakhari Kasar remains in serious condition. He is suffering from internal injuries and paralysis.
Kasar's family is now asking for help to cover medical costs. The family "appealed to the government, civil society organisations and members of the public for urgent support." Authorities continue to look into the drowning case while the injured children receive treatment at the hospital.
