Imphal: A fresh attack has reportedly been launched against villagers from Langka Naga village, also known as Taniuluang, in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, leaving two Naga villagers seriously injured, according to local reports.
The attack took place at around 7:30 am on Friday, August 14, as Nagas observe Naga Independence Day.
According to local sources, around 50 armed men, allegedly belonging to Kuki militant groups, attacked the Liangmai Naga village with sophisticated weapons. Local accounts alleged that the operation was led by Jangboi Kipgen of the Kuki National Front (KNF), along with cadres of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA). The allegations have not been independently verified.
The latest incident comes less than two months after an armed confrontation at Langka on June 13, when suspected KNF(P) and KNF(N) cadres reportedly attacked the village, triggering an exchange of fire with Naga village volunteers. One Kuki militant was reported killed and two others injured.
Concerns over attacks on Liangmai Naga villages have also grown following an arson attack at Tokpa Liangmai Naga village, where officials said at least nine (9) houses were burnt after armed men allegedly opened fire and set the structures ablaze. The Liangmai Naga Council claimed that 10 houses and a church were destroyed and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Friday’s attack has renewed concerns over the security of Naga villages along the Imphal–Tamei (IT) Road and surrounding areas.
