Imphal: Kuki protesters blocked the road to Kendriya Vidyalaya in Leimakhong on Friday morning. The blockade effectively shut down the campus. School vehicles carrying students from Kanto Sabal were stopped at 7.30 am. Protesters barred Meitei, Naga, and Nepali children from entering the facility.
Many students stood stranded before heading back home. The protest stems from an ongoing agitation against economic blockades in the Kangpokpi district. Naga groups previously targeted National Highway-2, citing the killing of six civilians by suspected Kuki militants. Naga groups claim their movement continues until they get justice.
Army officials from the Red Shield Division met with families in Kanto Sabal after the disruption. They promised to protect students and keep the roads clear. Residents asked for a formal document to back those promises. The Army declined to give a written assurance. One parent stated, "Many students were forced to return home after being stranded outside the campus."
Tensions remain high between Kuki, Naga, and Meitei factions. Kuki groups also attempted to march on Kanto Sabal on July 2. They claim current restrictions choke the supply of goods to their neighborhoods. The situation remains volatile.
