Imphal: A Kuki civil society group in Ukhrul has issued an urgent appeal to Manipur state officials and security leaders following a coordinated armed attack on the village of Mongkot Chepu. The assault, which occurred on the evening of May 26, 2026, left residents in a state of terror for several hours.
According to the Kuki CSO Working Committee, the attack began at approximately 6:48 PM and continued until 11:08 PM. Armed forces reportedly launched the assault from three separate directions, including areas near the Litan Sareikhong Tangkhul Police station and the Sikibung Lilen Ridge. The attackers utilized mortars and other sophisticated weapons during the operation, highlighting the vulnerability of Kuki-Zo communities located in the border areas of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The organization criticized the government for what it described as systemic security failures and repeated targeting of civilians. They are now demanding that the state provide security forces with a clear operational mandate to protect these habitations without political interference. The committee warned that the ongoing silence of both state and central governments is unacceptable and is eroding public trust.
In its statement, the body questioned how much longer the Kuki-Zo population can endure such violence. They demanded that the government take immediate action to secure these areas. Should authorities remain unable to guarantee basic safety, the group asserted that officials must be honest about their limitations and facilitate effective alternative arrangements for the affected residents.
