Kohima Students Learn Risks of Substance Addiction

Kohima: Youth Mission teamed up with the Tobacco Control Committee at Capital College of Higher Education in Kohima to host the Nasha Mukti Bharat Abhiyaan program on September 19. They want students to understand the risks of substance use. Organizers aimed to show how drugs and alcohol hijack brain function, behavior, and decision-making.

Project Coordinator Deto Keyho opened the event. He explained the mission of his group to the students. Assistant Professor Niekhoto Curhah followed, stressing the need for youth to know the consequences of addiction. The talk shifted to the brain. Project Director Joseph Nyekha led a session titled Neuroscience of Addiction.

Nyekha detailed how substances mess with reward systems and dopamine levels. He noted, "The consumption of addictive substances, including alcohol, can significantly affect the brain's reward system and dopamine levels, adding that addiction can place an individual in a survival-oriented state, sometimes leading them to engage in harmful or otherwise unimaginable behaviours in an attempt to obtain the substance." Recovery requires support, he added.

The event connected students to the Youth Mission Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts. Staff handed out brochures and educational materials. Counselor Hemjei Angh led the crowd in the Nasha Mukti Bharat Abhiyaan pledge. This initiative seeks to build a drug-free society through collective action. The session wrapped up with a vote of thanks from Keyho.
