Kohima Officials Release New Solid Waste Management Handbook

Kohima: Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, officially released the Solid Waste Management Rules Handbook 2026 on Friday. Issued by the PHED Urban Division, the new guidelines were distributed in both English and Hindi to representatives from ten local villages during a ceremony at the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

During the event, Buchem emphasized that past practices of indiscriminate waste disposal caused significant damage to public health and the local environment. He reminded attendees that the Supreme Court now mandates waste segregation at the source. "Failure to comply with the guidelines would invite penalties under prescribed regulations," the Deputy Commissioner cautioned.

The handbook outlines four distinct categories for sorting waste to ensure scientific handling of refuse. Officials from the PHED and village leaders attended the launch to discuss strategies for better community awareness. Buchem urged the village representatives to share these details widely to ensure the new measures are successfully implemented across the district.
