Shillong: The Khasi Hills Achik Joint Action Committee (KHAJAC) wants the state government to make language requirements for District Selection Committee (DSC) recruitment optional. Current rules force candidates to use Garo in the Garo Hills and Khasi in the Khasi Hills. This limits opportunity. KHAJAC representative Manuel ChMarak met with the Governor on Thursday to challenge the status quo.
Marak argued that the mandate hits Garo people living in the Khasi Hills particularly hard. Many families have resided there for generations. They deserve a fair shot at government work. Marak noted that because both Khasi and Garo serve as official languages of Meghalaya, the government should allow applicants to select either one for their exams. He told reporters, "Garo candidates residing in the Khasi Hills" are currently disadvantaged by the rigid regional policy.
The committee maintains that the present system serves as a barrier to employment. They want the Governor to intervene and force a policy review. Providing a choice ensures all candidates compete on equal footing regardless of their mother tongue.
