Agartala: A political firestorm is burning in the Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura. The proposed construction of a shed at the Joy Jagannath Temple in East Harina was scrapped, despite taxpayers funding the job. Opposition Leader and CPI(M) MLA Jiten Choudhury faces intense heat over the failed initiative.
Official records show the government earmarked funds for three projects: the Ratnamoni ADC Village Buddha Temple, the Borokhola Harichand Thakur Temple in Bijoynagar, and the Jagannath Temple. The state sanctioned Rs 8.38 lakh for the Jagannath site and issued a work order to local contractor Liton Dey through the Sat Chand Rural Development Department.
Trouble started early. On January 12, 2026, Choudhury opened work at the other two temples. Local pushback blocked the planned foundation stone ceremony for the Jagannath shed that same day. Six months later, on July 16, the Sabroom Sub-Divisional Magistrate office killed the project during Rath Yatra.
Sudarshan Chakraborty, the temple committee secretary, claims the committee never saw official paperwork for the project. He called the sudden cancellation unfortunate. Confusion lingers. Choudhury points the finger at local troublemakers. He claims officials faced physical obstructions right before building began.
Choudhury defended his decision to pull the plug. He stated, "I waited for six months, but no one from the temple committee came forward to resolve the matter. Public money cannot remain frozen indefinitely, so the funds were returned." The MLA further alleged that opponents are manipulating the situation to stall development. Tension in Sabroom remains high as the public demands answers.
