Shillong: Rajya Sabha member-elect James Sangma is advocating for a dual approach to Meghalaya’s international boundary, emphasizing the need for robust security measures while simultaneously expanding trade opportunities with Bangladesh. Addressing concerns regarding recent attempted infiltrations, Sangma stressed that India must protect its territorial integrity at all costs. He confirmed that government agencies are actively monitoring the region and pledged his full support for central initiatives aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
As part of his parliamentary agenda, Sangma plans to prioritize the completion of fencing projects along the border. He intends to coordinate with both state officials and the central government to ensure these infrastructure goals are met. Beyond security, he highlighted the significant economic potential of the shared border, suggesting that the state should aggressively pursue closer commercial ties.
Sangma noted that for Meghalaya, the regional trade landscape often favors proximity, remarking that “looking south” often makes more practical sense than other regional trade initiatives. He plans to work closely with the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry to identify new opportunities for growth. By balancing safety with development, he believes the state can effectively leverage its strategic location.
