Shillong: Jaintia Students’ Union leaders Jersom Shylla and Bocheru Mi Pohsnem filed multiple FIRs against Shree Cement Limited and East Jaintia Hills officials. The charges follow a July 31 public hearing at Lum Syrman that descended into chaos. Violence broke out. The union claims police brutality and road blockades sabotaged the process.
The formal complaints allege attempted murder, grievous assault, and criminal conspiracy. They cite specific infrastructure damage at Lad Tongseng and Saipung. Leaders also lodged a separate FIR at the Umpleng police outpost regarding an attack on an ambulance. The union accuses police of failing to protect civilians while firing tear gas at protesters and intimidating women.
The Jaintia National Council also entered the fray. President Sambormi Lyngdoh claims police from Garo Hills were brought in to suppress locals. Six council members were detained at Umpleng after facing a lathi charge. The group insists the government used coercion and monetary inducements to manipulate the outcome.
The council officially rejected the legitimacy of the consultation. They described the hearing as a “state-sponsored farce” and a government-company exercise. Both organizations are now pushing the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission for an impartial investigation into the systemic abuse of power.
