Imphal: Writers, scholars, and academics converged today at the Institute of Co-operative Management in Lamphelpat, Imphal. The two-day international seminar, titled Houjikkee Manipuri Khorinol: Manung Amasung Mapan, investigates the evolving state of contemporary Manipuri literature. It runs through September 13. The event focuses on how local works connect with readers and communities living far beyond state borders.
The Leikol organized the gathering. It aims to spark dialogue on language, identity, and the various hurdles writers face when crossing geographic lines. Attendees will dissect current literary trends and how these stories move through a modern, global audience.
Thangjam Arunkumar Singh, the MLA for 15-Wangkhei Assembly Constituency, served as the chief guest for the opening ceremony. Other key participants included Ch. Subadani Devi, President of Leikol, and Dr. Munish Ningthoujam, Zonal Director of the ICCR North Eastern Region under the Ministry of External Affairs. Sunanda Thokchom, Secretary of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, and Dr. Kh. Ramanando Bheigyachandra, Director of ICM, Imphal, also joined the discussion.
The organizers emphasized the need for a shared space for critical thought. They intend to "create a meaningful platform for critical engagement with contemporary Manipuri literature and to encourage dialogue among writers, researchers and literary practitioners from different backgrounds." Sessions will continue tomorrow to further examine how Manipuri literature holds its own in a shifting world.
