Imphal: Leaders gathered at the Rikhumei Taphou Women’s Conference Hall in Senapati today to address growing demographic fears. The consultative meeting drew youth, women, senior citizens, and members from the Liangmai, Poumai, Mao, Thangal, Maram, Rongmei, and Tangkhul communities. Rev. C. H. Lubui opened the session with a prayer.
Social activist Ashang Kasar warned that indigenous peoples face a dire situation. He pointed to the settlement of Kuki refugees in Moreh, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, and Chandel district as a primary concern. He urged the Naga community to remain vigilant and use democratic channels to prevent further demographic shifts. Kasar insisted on a united front when dealing with government authorities.
Dr. R. K. Chawang shifted the focus to the hill areas. He blasted the improper implementation of government development programs and alleged widespread corruption. He demanded transparency. Citizens must actively monitor these projects and hold officials accountable, he argued. He maintained that curbing corruption remains the only way to ensure real development reaches the public.
Kasar did not mince words regarding the federal response. "The Central Government has not shown sufficient sincerity in addressing their concerns," he said. He warned that disunity leaves the door open for exploitation by outside groups. Without clear policy and sharp diplomacy, he claimed, future generations stand to lose their land and identity. The meeting closed with a prayer by Rev. Ch. Pouhotdin, reinforcing a final call for collective action.
