Imphal: Manipur athlete and Indian Army Havaldar Moramba Laishram earned a bronze medal in the Men's U-23 Sabre individual event. The Commonwealth Fencing Championship is currently underway in Lagos, Nigeria. The tournament runs from August 9 to 14.
Laishram, a native of Singjamei and son of the late Laishram Basanta Singh, fought his way to the semifinals. He cleared a major hurdle in the quarterfinals by beating local athlete Akinyosoye Oluwafolayemi. He fell short of the final, but his performance earned him a spot on the podium.
The Indian team dominated the opening day. They hauled in 17 total medals, including four gold, four silver, and nine bronze. India achieved a clean sweep in the Men's Sabre event. Nikhil Wagh took gold, Lakshay Badser won silver, and Laishram shared the bronze with teammate Ashwini Arya.
The team proved their talent early. Fencers reached the podium in all six individual events on the first day. This reflects India's rising status in the sport. Officials noted the team made "a strong early statement at the championship."
Laishram continues to build his resume. He previously grabbed gold at the 2024 32nd Junior National Fencing Championship. He is already slated to compete in the upcoming 35th Senior National Fencing Championship. Other notable results on the day included Lokesh Vemani taking silver in the Men's Epee.
