Guwahati: IIT Guwahati conferred 2,265 degrees on Sunday during its 28th convocation ceremony. The graduating class featured 932 B.Tech, 556 M.Tech, and 412 doctoral scholars. Students from design, science, arts, and management programs also walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.
Top performers took home major prizes. Saptarshi Mukherjee grabbed the President of India Gold Medal for the top cumulative performance in the undergraduate category. Other winners included Atri Chattopadhyay, who earned the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal, and Sarthak Kapoor and Praneel Bhattacharya, who secured Governor of Assam Gold Medals. The institute also handed out 18 silver medals.
Chief guest Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, spoke to the crowd about the changing requirements of the workforce. He noted that deep knowledge and judgement matter more than just producing quick answers. "Deep knowledge, sound judgement and the ability to identify significant problems would remain more valuable than simply generating answers," he said.
Director Prof Devendra Jalihal told the graduates to aim for excellence in their future careers. He reported that the institute published 2,478 research papers this past year. The school is now updating its curriculum to focus more on hands-on learning and industry ties. Officials also highlighted the Manekshaw Centre of Excellence and new partnerships with Japanese universities as key steps in boosting national security and research.
