Guwahati: Heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning caused widespread waterlogging across Dibrugarh, submerging major roads, residential neighborhoods, and commercial hubs. The sudden deluge disrupted traffic throughout the town, forcing commuters to navigate through flooded streets.
Hardest hit areas included Thana Chariali, Mancotta Road, Phoolbagan, Milan Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and the central market district. Residents reported that local streets transformed into streams, with floodwaters entering low-lying areas and paralysing daily activities.
Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Commissioner Novas K. Das attributed the flooding to the intense volume of rain received in a short period. He stated, "The civic body was closely monitoring the situation and had deployed teams to facilitate drainage and prevent further inconvenience."
The recurring nature of these floods has fueled criticism regarding the city's infrastructure and the effectiveness of urban planning in the region. Although Dibrugarh is envisioned as a secondary capital and model urban center, locals argue that repeated infrastructure projects have failed to resolve the chronic drainage failures. Authorities have issued a caution to residents, urging them to exercise care while traveling through the affected zones.
