Guwahati: Assam legislators tapped BJP MLA Habbey Teron as the new Deputy Speaker of the 16th Legislative Assembly on Monday. Teron ran unopposed for the position. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass confirmed the win after noting that three nominations supported his bid.

Speaker Dass announced the appointment to the floor. "As there is no other nomination, I declare Dr. Habbey Teron as the Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly," Dass said.

Teron is a first-time lawmaker. He represents the Amri constituency, a seat created during the 2023 delimitation. This appointment makes him the first person from the new district to hold the office.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma backed the selection. He praised Teron as a son of the hills and said he expects the new deputy to serve with sincerity. Members from the BJP, AGP, BPF, Congress, and TMC also offered their support for the term ahead.

Teron will help manage House proceedings. He will also step in to lead the Assembly whenever the Speaker is away.
