Governor Vijayashankar Unveils Comprehensive Guide to Meghalaya's Butterflies

Shillong: Governor CH Vijayashankar officially released the book Butterflies of Meghalaya during a ceremony at Lok Bhavan on Monday. The publication serves as a major contribution to the documentation of the state's natural history by cataloging 698 distinct species. This data indicates that Meghalaya hosts more than half of the total butterfly diversity found across India.

Renowned researchers Krushnamegh Kunte and Sanjay Sondhi authored the work, identifying the Garo Hills as one of the three primary butterfly hotspots in Northeast India. The book highlights the region's unique habitat and species richness. The project was conceptualized by HC Chaudhary, ACS to the Governor, while he was working with the Forest Department, and received essential support from field officers.

The Eicher Group Foundation, which acts as the CSR arm of Royal Enfield, provided the funding for the print edition. During the launch, Governor Vijayashankar emphasized that butterflies serve as vital indicators for the overall health of an ecosystem. He urged local communities, educational institutions, and traditional governing bodies to prioritize the protection of the state's forests and delicate environments.

The authors expressed their desire for the book to encourage students and researchers to pursue local conservation efforts. They believe this resource will provide a foundation for future field studies and grassroots environmental advocacy.
