Shillong: Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) officials are moving to correct clerical errors on official documents and logos. The move comes after Tura MDC and BJP state vice president Bernard N. Marak accused the council of intentionally removing the word Autonomous from its stationery.
Cherak W. Momin, Executive Member and spokesperson for the Garo Hills United Alliance, denied any plot to strip the council of its status. He attributed the mistakes to printing services hired outside the council before it established its own internal press. These outside printers reportedly dropped the word by mistake during production.
“Indiba GHADC-ni nangchongmotgipa lekkarango ‘Autonomous’ kattako ra·galna ba gimaatna sike da·alo Executive Committee-ko chalaienggiparang, iako dakenga ong·ja,” Momin said. He explained that legacy issues dating back to previous committees, which occasionally used shortened names like Garo District Council, contributed to the confusion.
Momin confirmed that the current Executive Committee has ordered a total stop to the use of any forms missing the word. The council has also installed new machinery to bring printing operations back in-house to prevent future errors. Officials are now reviewing all current paperwork to ensure the name is properly restored.
