Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court spared a killer from the gallows on Wednesday, August 5. Judges Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury commuted the death sentence of Rintu Sarma to life imprisonment. The court upheld his conviction for the 2021 murder of Nandita Saikia. Sarma remains guilty.

Sarma worked as a Grade-IV employee at Moridhal College. He attacked Saikia with a machete on August 21, 2021, after she rejected his marriage proposal. The victim was walking home with her father and a friend when the assault happened. She died five days later after a transfer to a hospital in Dibrugarh.

The Dhemaji District and Sessions Court originally sentenced the attacker to death, citing the heinous nature of the crime. Sarma appealed that verdict, seeking a lighter sentence. The High Court eventually agreed to scale back the punishment. This ruling confirms the underlying conviction while removing the threat of capital punishment.
