Four Assam Police Officers Jailed Over Fatal Raid

Guwahati: Police arrested four officers in Cachar on June 26 following a botched anti-gambling raid. The operation in Lakhipur ended in tragedy. Mohit Kanu jumped into the Chiri River to escape the cops and died. His body turned up the next day.

Local residents and the victim's family were furious. They blocked roads and surrounded the local police outpost. They demanded justice. The Senior Superintendent of Police for Cachar suspended Santosh Biswas, Kagai Rongmai, Sarbananda Doley, and Suraj Borgoyary shortly after the incident.

A departmental inquiry proved the officers acted without approval. They skipped standard procedures. Authorities acted on these findings to make the arrests on Thursday. A court ordered the men into judicial custody. The state police confirmed the officers ran the operation "without informing or obtaining permission from their superior officers."
