Shillong: Seven former UDP legislators visited the BJP state office in Shillong on Friday. Supporters greeted them with firecrackers. This follows their formal move to the BJP in New Delhi on Wednesday. They now aim to turn previous discussions with central leadership into actual policy changes.
Former UDP leader Lahkmen Rymbui spoke for the group. He said they joined the BJP to protect indigenous interests rather than for simple political gain. Their agenda includes coal mining, the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, Niamtre recognition, and the Inner Line Permit. The work ahead is difficult. Rymbui told reporters, "We have raised our issues, now we will follow up."
The group does not expect instant results. Rymbui noted that administrative processes take time to produce decisions. He refused to set ultimatums for the party regarding these goals. The legislators left the UDP without lingering bitterness. They hope to focus on the people of Meghalaya instead of potential Cabinet seats.
Rymbui acknowledged that the group might face public criticism for the switch. He asked the public to wait and judge them by their future work. They see this visit as the official start of their labor within the BJP organization.
