Forest Officials Shut Down Four Illegal Sawmills in West Garo Hills

Shillong: Forest officials tore down four illegal sawmills in the West Garo Hills during a week of targeted raids. The operations hit the Chibinang-Bolarbita and Selsella sectors on June 23 and June 29. Teams from the Hollaidonga Range led the crackdown. They wanted to stop unauthorized logging dead in its tracks.

Three mills fell in the Chibinang-Bolarbita area. One more went down in Selsella. Agents seized heavy machinery during the sweep, including bandsaw assemblies, driving wheels, and electric motors. They also hauled away a massive pile of illegally cut timber logs.

Forest enforcement teams moved on solid tips about secret milling setups. DFO Rupankar K Marak stated that forest enforcement teams acted on intelligence regarding clandestine milling operations. The department plans to keep hunting for other illegal mills hidden across the district. Officials warned that anyone caught logging without a permit will face tough legal consequences as the state fights to save its trees.
