Itanagar: A cloudburst triggered deadly flash floods at the Keyi Panyor hydroelectric project in Yazali on Wednesday. Heavy rain started at 6 am, submerging 10 to 15 government quarters as water poured into the NEEPCO Colony. Five people remain missing while 17 others sustained injuries in the chaos.

Three victims are in critical condition and currently receiving care at Ziro Hospital. A joint team of police and NDRF personnel pulled a young boy and his dog to safety around 1 pm. They had been stranded near the reservoir since the early morning disaster.

District Disaster Management Officer Beru Dulom identified the missing as Elesh Marak, Balari Marak, Tao Anjina, Nirmala Gupta and Sourav Kumar. Emergency crews are sweeping the area now. "Search operations are underway in the reservoir area and downstream stretches. SDRF, NDRF and local teams have been deployed to trace the missing persons," Dulom said.

Torrential rain dumped 72.8 mm of water on Yazali within 24 hours. The peak intensity hit between 6 am and 9 am. Officials now warn residents to avoid riverbanks and dams throughout the monsoon season.
