FKJGP demands better safety and compensation after lineman's death in Garo Hills

Shillong: The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has urged the MePDCL to implement urgent safety improvements following the death of lineman Dalben Sangma. Sangma died from electrocution on May 26 while conducting repairs near Edenbari. Reports indicate the power line was energized while he was still working on it.

The FKJGP described the incident as part of a recurring pattern of workplace hazards in the Garo Hills region. The group cited a previous incident in Dalu where a lineman narrowly survived a similar electrocution. Regarding compensation, the Federation labeled the current offer of 52,000 rupees for Sangma’s family as inadequate given his dedicated service.

To prevent future tragedies, the FKJGP has proposed several safety mandates for the department. These include providing comprehensive electrical training and standard protective gear such as insulated gloves, helmets, safety belts, and proper footwear. The group also suggested increasing the workforce to prevent exhaustion among linemen, who often work in challenging weather conditions.

Additionally, the Federation recommended that all MePDCL employees register for the e-Shram scheme to ensure financial protection against accidents. They also called for the extension of formal life insurance coverage to all staff performing hazardous field duties to protect the families of those working on the front lines.
