Shillong: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district on Saturday to inaugurate a major road project and review new sports infrastructure. The Jowai-Nartiang-Kdiap-Khanduli road, funded by the New Development Bank, cost more than Rs 59 crore to complete. Officials expect the new route to improve market access and essential service delivery for residents, while supporting local livelihoods by strengthening transport links.

During her visit, Sitharaman also inspected the newly developed Wahiajer Football Stadium. Built with more than Rs 65 crore under the Centre's Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme, the 16-acre facility stands as one of the largest in the region. The complex features a FIFA-compliant football field, an eight-lane synthetic track, and specialized areas for diverse athletic events like pole vaulting and javelin throw. With seating for over 6,000 spectators, the stadium is designed to host major football and athletics competitions.

The Finance Minister interacted with local schoolchildren and athletes at the facility to discuss how these projects provide new pathways for youth. Sitharaman emphasized the importance of the developments, stating that these initiatives play a key role in expanding "opportunities for young athletes in the state." These infrastructure investments are part of a broader government effort to enhance public facilities and connectivity across Meghalaya.
