Family Claims Negligence After Woman Dies During IVF Treatment in Guwahati

Guwahati: Liza Phukan Koch is dead. The Rahmaria resident died after receiving IVF care at the Indira IVF Centre in Guwahati. Her family blames the facility for negligence and a fatal delay in medical support. She had been seeing Dr. Dibyajyoti Goswami at the Lachit Nagar clinic since May.

Trouble started on September 19. Koch took a prescribed tablet that night and immediately developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Her health plummeted before dawn. Relatives claim the nurse on duty ignored her critical state. They eventually rushed her to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital where doctors confirmed she was gone.

Money remains a sore point. The family already paid 3 lakh rupees for the procedure and the clinic demanded another 3 lakh. They were ready to pay, but the staff provided confusing updates. They were told 45 days ago she was pregnant, only to be told later the test came back negative. The relatives are now demanding accountability for these conflicting reports.

The family filed a formal complaint at the Panbazar Police Station. They want a full investigation into the clinic's practices. They argue that private fertility centers need tighter oversight. Regarding the clinic's operations, the family stated, "the growing number of such facilities requires greater accountability." A police inquiry will determine if the staff failed their patient.
