Guwahati: An internal Congress election review meeting in Assam turned chaotic on May 30 as factional divisions spilled into open confrontation. The gathering, held at Rajiv Bhavan in Hailakandi, was intended to assess organizational performance but ended prematurely after heated verbal exchanges broke out among party members.
Aminul Haque Laskar, serving as the party observer, faced slogans directed against him and the state leadership. The situation escalated to a point where security personnel had to escort Laskar from the premises to ensure his safety. According to Laskar, the disruption was a calculated effort to undermine the state party hierarchy.
Speaking at a press conference in Silchar, Laskar directly blamed supporters of MLA Zubair Anam for the unrest. He alleged that specific Youth Congress workers, who reportedly worked against the party during the recent Lok Sabha elections, orchestrated the disturbance. These individuals allegedly raised slogans targeting Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi while voicing support for Anam.
Laskar stated that the incident represented a serious breach of party discipline. He intends to file a comprehensive report with the state committee to push for disciplinary action against those identified. Neither Zubair Anam nor the state Congress leadership have released an official response regarding the allegations or the disruption.
