Guwahati: Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome killed 60 people in Assam since January. State health officials confirmed 15 deaths came from Japanese Encephalitis, while Acute Encephalitis Syndrome caused 45 fatalities. Infections spread across several districts.
Baksa, Cachar, Chirang, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Tamulpur reported deaths from Japanese Encephalitis. Barpeta, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, and Kamrup also saw fatal cases. Monsoon rains increase transmission risks for these diseases.
Health authorities are now intensifying surveillance and preventive measures. Officials confirmed that "both JE and AES continue to pose serious public health challenges in the state" as they push for more vaccination drives and better healthcare infrastructure to protect vulnerable residents.
