East Garo Hills Residents Oppose Plans for New Bonded Warehouse

Shillong: Residents of Nengkra and neighboring villages in East Garo Hills have formally opposed plans to open a new bonded warehouse in their community. The project, proposed under the state Excise Department, has triggered a backlash from local citizens and organizations including the GSU, GSMC, and AHAM.

In a joint complaint submitted to the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, the groups highlighted that the selected location is situated in a populated residential zone. They argued that the facility would degrade local living standards and threaten public order.

The collective expressed deep concerns regarding the potential impact on their neighborhood. Their official complaint stated, "The opening of such a Bonded Warehouse under the excise department may lead to several problems such as disturbance of peace, increase in anti-social activities, and safety concerns, especially for women and children."

Beyond social order, residents raised fears regarding environmental damage and the disruption of local harmony. The groups have urged the Deputy Commissioner to intervene and cancel the proposal to protect the interests of the local population.
