Imphal: The All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers' Union claims National Highway 37 is breaking down. The route connects Jiribam to Imphal. It is the primary artery for essential goods in Manipur. Union President Sanasam Pratap Singh says the road is failing because of poor construction and neglect.
Landslides and wrecked culverts block traffic during the monsoon. Drivers face danger daily. Despite a surge in heavy truck traffic, the road remains a death trap. Pratap Singh said, "The highway was neither constructed nor maintained to the required standards."
Delays remain a major headache. Security convoy escorts force drivers to wait for hours. Perishable food rots before it reaches the market. The union is fed up with the government ignoring their demands for repairs and better infrastructure.
Illegal check-gates drain cash from transporters. Operators pay bribes just to keep moving. The union demands the state shut these gates down immediately. They asked local communities to support drivers who keep the state economy alive by moving vital supplies.
