Dibrugarh Police Arrest Man for Extortion and ULFA Ties

Guwahati: Dibrugarh police locked up Mondeep Changmai on Monday for allegedly shaking down locals and acting as a middleman for the banned militant group ULFA. Officers from the Tingkhang station nabbed Changmai at his home in Changmai Gaon near Lengeri.

The law is moving fast. Authorities filed charges against him under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Officials confirmed the charges focus on his roles in "extortion activities and acted as a conduit for the proscribed insurgent organisation."

Changmai faced a judge following his initial interrogation. The court ordered him into judicial custody while the investigation continues. Police are keeping a tight lid on the specific details of the extortion plot and the extent of his ties to the insurgents for now.
