Guwahati: Dhubri Forest Department officials dismantled two illegal band sawmills and confiscated a significant stockpile of timber during an operation on Friday, June 19. The raid targeted Maderteri Char, a remote riverine region known for its challenging terrain and limited access.
Acting on specific intelligence, the team uncovered machinery used for processing timber along with logs of Sal and Teak. Forest personnel transported all seized equipment and wood to the district headquarters to be held under departmental custody.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Dhubri Divisional Forest Officer Golap Kumar Bania. Ranger Officer Salam Sarkar led the ground team, which included members of the Forest Protection Force and local forest check post staff.
Authorities noted that the isolated nature of these char areas frequently provides cover for illegal logging syndicates. Addressing the commitment to stop these activities, officials stated, "The department remains committed to curbing forest-related offences and preventing the unlawful exploitation of natural resources."
The forest department plans to intensify anti-smuggling and anti-deforestation efforts across border regions and riverine islands. A formal investigation into the sawmill operations is currently underway.
