Shillong: DD News Meghalaya started a weekly sign language news bulletin on August 8. The program airs every Saturday at 11 AM. Viewers can watch on the DD Meghalaya satellite channel or the official YouTube page. It is a first for the state and the Northeast.
The bulletin covers current events and public announcements from across the globe. It aims to bridge the information gap for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Sarang Pofale, the head of the station, says the move fulfills a promise to keep the public informed. He stated that the initiative reflects the broadcaster’s commitment to “reaching the last mile” and meeting the information needs of the community.
Experts are praising the shift toward inclusive media. Dr. Melissa G. Wallang of NERIE-NCERT wants more deaf professionals involved in production to ensure high accuracy. Meanwhile, interpreter Immaculate Kharkongor believes the show provides independence. The bulletin gives viewers a way to get the news without relying on others.
