Guwahati: A high-profile criminal slipped through police fingers Sunday night in Dharapur. Tara Miya, a resident of Goroimari, escaped while assisting officers with a weapon recovery operation near Jahaj Ghat. He caught the lawmen off guard. He shoved the team aside and bolted into the dark.
Two police officers sustained injuries during the struggle to restrain him. The operation under Maligaon Police Station limits aimed to locate an M20 pistol used in a robbery. Police successfully recovered the firearm from a bush near the riverside despite the suspect fleeing the scene.
Authorities have launched a search operation across Dharapur and surrounding areas. The fugitive faces a heavy criminal rap sheet. Officials confirmed he is linked to dacoity cases in Barpeta, Kamalpur, Garchuk, and Khetri. He also faces a murder charge in Chaygaon for the death of Amzad Khan.
Miya previously stood accused alongside five others for a robbery at the home of Ramesh Chandra Bhuyan near the Radisson Blu Hotel in Guwahati. Local police continue to hunt for the man. Officials stated, "Search teams have been deployed across Dharapur and nearby localities as police continue efforts to locate and apprehend the absconding accused."

Authorities confirmed the jailbreak occurred late Sunday night, specifically identified as August 10. The investigation remains active as officials pursue the suspect.
In a separate operation on the same day, Guwahati police dismantled a sex racket in Dispur. Officers arrested four suspects, two men and two women, for trafficking young women into the city with false promises of work. Victims were held in a Hatigaon rental property, where they faced threats and starvation if they refused to comply with the ring. Two of the three rescued women are minors aged 15 and 16. Investigators are now tracking potential connections to a larger human trafficking network spanning the state.

Beyond the sex racket bust, police confirmed the operation in Hatigaon started after the victims escaped and filed formal complaints about the abuse. The rescued girls are currently being held in protective custody while interrogations continue.
Separately, the Fatashil Ambari police nabbed a man in a counterfeit cash sting. Officers hauled in Harsh Agarwal of Bharalumukh with nearly one lakh rupees in fake currency. Investigators are now working to track the source of the funny money and see if Agarwal is just a local player or connected to a broader syndicate.
