Cyber Scammers Target Assam Landowners With Fake Fee Demands

Guwahati: Cyber criminals are shaking down residents in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. They pose as revenue circle officials and local land record keepers. The scammers demand immediate online payments for bogus land clearance fees. Several reports surfaced from the Moran Revenue Circle and near the Khowang Police Station.

Bulbuli Gogoi of Dulia Lahowal village lost 4,260 rupees after a phone caller claimed to represent the Revenue Circle Office. The victim grew suspicious when the crook demanded even more cash. She checked with her village headman and confirmed the ruse. She filed a formal FIR at the Khowang Police Station. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.

Other residents dodged similar traps. Dipen Gogoi of Rangchali village received a call from someone pretending to be a Mandal from the SDC office. The caller wanted 2,000 rupees to update land records online. Gogoi had his original receipt and refused to pay. Tulsi Gogoi of Dulia Lahowal village also received a demand for 1,600 rupees via Google Pay for a land file clearance. He smelled a rat and kept his money.

Local officials warn the public to stay alert. Do not send cash or share personal data with strangers. Residents must remain wary of anyone claiming to represent government offices over the phone. One victim noted the danger, stating, "Residents have urged people to remain vigilant against such fraudulent calls and not transfer money or share sensitive information with unknown callers claiming to be government officials."
