Shillong: A construction worker died on Friday after being buried by a sudden collapse of soil in Mawdiangdiang, located near Shillong in Meghalaya. The accident occurred while crews were excavating land to lay the foundation for a new building.

The District Disaster Management Authority of East Khasi Hills alerted the State Disaster Response Force, which arrived at the site to begin rescue efforts. Rescuers spent nearly an hour digging through the debris before finding the worker. Senior Staff Officer Paul H. Shylla confirmed the grim outcome of the mission. "At around 4:10 pm, the SDRF team recovered the trapped labourer from under the debris. Sadly, the victim was found dead," Shylla said.

Investigators believe a large mass of soil from the higher part of the site gave way and slid into the excavation pit. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased. Following the recovery, the body was transferred to local officials to complete legal formalities. Representatives from the Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, the local headman, and the project owner monitored the scene throughout the operation.
