Congress stages Save Democracy protest in Mokokchung

Kohima: The District Congress Committee in Mokokchung held a Save Democracy car rally on Monday, October 5. Participants flew black flags during the drive, which started at the Public Ground before moving through Sewak Gate toward the DEF office. This protest followed a call from the INDIA bloc for demonstrations between October 2 and 8 against the Election Commission of India and the current Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

DCC president I. Temsu Jamir addressed the crowd, framing the protest as a fight for fundamental voting rights rather than simple partisan politics. Jamir claimed the federal government is seizing control of electoral processes away from state mechanisms, pointing to recent events in Goa as evidence. He warned residents to verify their names and the names of their relatives against copies of the rolls held by the DCC, as the timeframe for lodging objections is short.

Jamir insisted that proactive public involvement is the only way to protect democratic participation. "By raising our voices right now, we will get our rights," Jamir said. The DCC used the event to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition groups nationwide are echoing these demands for Kumar to step down.
