Guwahati: The Congress party has appointed Wazed Ali Choudhury as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Alongside this, the party named Dr. Joy Prakash Das as the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party. These appointments, which take effect immediately, were confirmed by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal following approval from party president Mallikarjun Kharge.

The decision follows a series of internal discussions regarding the structure of the party leadership within the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi previously noted that the final selection would be made by the party's central leadership after consultations with local legislators and observers. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel had also recently visited Guwahati to help finalize the leadership arrangement.

These leaders will be responsible for managing party activities and shaping legislative strategy on the floor of the assembly. The appointments come after the Congress secured 19 seats in the 2026 assembly elections. Among those legislators, 18 are Muslim, while Joy Prakash Das serves as the party's sole Hindu MLA.
