Shillong: Director Christopher Nolan brought his latest film, The Odyssey, to Mumbai for a press tour. The trip marks a long-awaited homecoming for the filmmaker, who previously intended to visit during the release of Tenet. Pandemic lockdowns forced him to cancel those plans. Nolan says he wanted to visit for years.
Nolan first arrived in Mumbai years ago for a film conference. He says he encountered a unique passion for the medium among local moviegoers. "I’ve never been anywhere in the world with an appreciation of what movies can be or what they should be for audiences," Nolan told reporters. He notes that films serve as a universal language capable of connecting different cultures through shared themes of love, laughter, and tears.
The production utilized a new technological breakthrough to shoot The Odyssey entirely in IMAX. Past projects prevented this due to the loud operation of the cameras. Nolan’s crew used a specialized blimping system to silence the equipment. This allowed the actors to perform their most dramatic scenes without mechanical noise disrupting the audio. He previously filmed in both Jodhpur and Mumbai, citing the city's beauty and the skill of the local assistant directors.
Adapting the 3,000-year-old epic presented challenges. Nolan studied literature at university, though he jokingly downplays his academic success. He compares the process to his time working on the Dark Knight trilogy. He believes the best approach is to craft the strongest film possible while showing respect to the source material. Producer Emma Thomas worked alongside Nolan to interpret the classic story for modern audiences. The filmmaker remains convinced that India is the right place to premiere his work.
