Chandel Launches Swachh Gaon Surakshit Jalvayu Campaign for Sustainable Waste Management

Imphal: The Swachh Gaon, Surakshit Jalvayu (SGSJ) Campaign 2026 launched in Chandel on June 1, running through June 5. This initiative, part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), focuses on establishing sustainable solid waste management and promoting environmental conservation throughout local Gram Panchayats.

Executive Engineer K. Khamba Maring led the launch alongside Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) engineers Neisuokim Aimol, RD Mowarhring, and RL. Ngamhring. Village headmen also joined the event, which began with training sessions for Gram Panchayat leaders regarding the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 and Supreme Court mandates.

The campaign involves auditing community waste management assets to ensure local facilities operate effectively. Teams identified bulk waste generators and hosted awareness programs tied to Mission LiFE. These efforts emphasize reducing single-use plastics, conserving water, and encouraging better waste disposal habits among residents through community-led cleanliness drives.

Activities will conclude on World Environment Day with special Gram Sabha meetings and tree-planting events under the theme Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam. Discussions throughout the week highlight the importance of source segregation, composting, and long-term community responsibility in protecting the local environment.
