Kohima: The Chakhesang Women Welfare Society has issued a formal appeal to the public to ensure that traditional clothing is worn accurately and with respect. The organization emphasizes that these garments serve as vital symbols of identity and history that reflect generations of cultural values.
Concerns were raised regarding the rise of digitally altered or AI-generated content that incorrectly depicts traditional apparel. Specifically, the society noted instances where men's shawls were improperly incorporated into women's clothing, violating established customary practices. The group clarified that Chakhesang attire is strictly gendered and reflects specific social markers, including age, marital status, and individual achievements.
Under these guidelines, items designated for men should not be worn by women and vice versa. Additionally, garments reserved for married individuals or those who have earned specific status through their accomplishments should not be worn by anyone who does not meet those criteria. The organization warned that spreading inaccurate images on social media misinforms younger generations and those unfamiliar with local customs.
While the society welcomes efforts to promote indigenous culture, it expects designers, photographers, and content creators to prioritize historical sensitivity.
