Chümoukedima officials search for parents of abandoned newborn

Kohima: A three-day-old baby boy sits in the custody of the Child Welfare Committee in Chümoukedima. Residents found the infant at the 5th Mile Model Village local ground on June 24. The baby was trapped inside a black polythene bag left under a tree. People heard his cries around 7:20 p.m. and rushed to help.

Locals rescued the child, provided emergency feeding, and handed him to Child Helpline workers. He was stable. The Model Village Council condemned the act as "inhuman" and called for a swift police investigation to catch those responsible.

District Child Protection Officer Nikito Zhimomi issued an official notice regarding the case. Biological parents or legal guardians must step forward with proof of identity. Claimants have 60 days to contact the District Child Protection Unit or the Child Welfare Committee under the Juvenile Justice Act. Anyone with information should call 8787435019 or email dcpuchumoukedima@gmail.com.
