Guwahati: A federal survey team will arrive in Kheroni next month. They are checking the site for a new Greenfield Airport in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang confirmed the development after meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu in Delhi this Monday.
Ronghang pushed for the project during the meeting. He handed over a formal memorandum requesting faster progress on the facility. The project stems from Clause 5.1 of Annex-II in the 2021 Memorandum of Settlement. The council initially set aside 1,070.95 hectares of land at Borlangpher for the runway. Leaders later shifted the location to Kheroni to improve the project's long-term financial viability and strategic reach.
The council expects the airport to boost trade and tourism. It could eventually serve residents in West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Hojai, and Nagaon. Ronghang noted the ministry already advised a pre-feasibility study for this new location. Addressing the public, he wrote, "This is an important and encouraging step towards realizing the long-cherished aspiration of the people of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong."
Ronghang led a delegation that included MP Amarsing Tisso and Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Habbey Teron. The council plans to keep pressuring both state and central officials to ensure the commitment becomes reality. They see the site visit as a win for regional investment and employment.
