Kohima: The Capital College of Higher Education in Kohima held a workshop on media and journalism Friday at the Sahitya Sabha Hall. The IT and Media Cell and the National Service Scheme organized the event. Thejoto Nienu, a journalist at the Eastern Mirror, served as the primary speaker.
Nienu warned that social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube force users to sort verified facts from popular falsehoods. He defined journalism as the search for truth rather than just writing posts. Journalism serves as the Fourth Estate. It acts as a watchdog for democracy. The profession now faces heavy threats from deepfakes, synthetic voices, and manipulated digital media.
Nienu urged the students to look beyond the surface. He stated, "Media literacy was no longer something required only by journalists but was necessary for everyone who consumes and shares information." He highlighted that skills like research, deadline management, and critical thinking provide value in any career.
The journalist shared the highs and lows of the trade. He told students to pursue their unique talents and find their specific strengths. Assistant Professor Niekhoto Curhah opened the session. Vunthungo Ngullie led the program. Tatongkala L. Lohe provided the invocation, while student Sapfune performed a song. Kumuni delivered the closing remarks.
