Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a Senior Section Engineer from the Northeast Frontier Railway on June 14. The official worked in the Carriage and Wagon Department in Silchar, Assam, and was taken into custody for allegedly accepting a Rs 20,000 bribe from a contractor.
Authorities registered the case on June 13 after receiving a complaint from the contractor. The engineer reportedly demanded the money to process a pending payment of roughly Rs 20 lakh for completed project work. The bribe amount represented one percent of the total bill.
The agency laid a trap and apprehended the engineer while he was in the process of accepting the payment. "The accused demanded one per cent of the total pending bill amount for processing and clearing the bill," the CBI noted in an official statement.
Following the arrest, the CBI conducted searches at the engineer's home as part of its ongoing investigation. The official was scheduled to appear before a court in Guwahati, and the anti-corruption agency continues to examine the case.
