Guwahati: Tension spiked along the Assam-Mizoram border after Mizo residents pushed two kilometers into the Sribhumi district. The group claimed the West Kalagang area as Mizoram territory. They blocked a local resident from building a home on the contested land. The site sits near the Singla Forest Reserve, a zone historically prone to boundary conflicts.
Ramkrishnanagar Sub-Divisional Circle Officer Antara Pal and Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Chittaranjan Bora arrived to manage the crowd. They met with the Officer-in-Charge of the Kanmun Police Station in Mizoram's Mamit district. Both sides opted for a freeze on new construction to stop further friction. "Both sides agreed to maintain the existing status quo in the disputed area," according to the interim report.
Locals want permanent solutions. Past talks regarding encroachment in the Soru Bhirband area in 2020 failed to fix the border. Another fight previously hit the West Kalagang LP School regarding land measurements. Tensions are high. The states recall the July 26, 2021, clash at the Lailapur border that killed six Assam Police officers. Residents worry this latest standoff is just the start of more violence without a formal boundary survey.
