Shillong: A tense confrontation erupted between the Border Security Force and Border Guards Bangladesh on Wednesday near Mahendraganj in the South West Garo Hills. The incident began when a man, later identified as a resident of Bangladesh, attempted to cross into Indian territory. Both forces initially refused to accept the man, leading to a heated argument and a standoff in no-man’s land.
The man carried no identification, which complicated efforts to determine his nationality. As the dispute escalated, residents from nearby Bangladeshi villages gathered to protest his return. The individual was eventually moved to the Bikashganj police station for safekeeping while authorities worked to verify his identity.
The situation reached a peaceful conclusion on Thursday morning. Relatives of the man arrived and provided documentation confirming he was Chasti Chandra Barman, a resident of the Rajshahi district who had been missing for two months. Officials noted: "The matter was resolved on Thursday morning, when relatives of the Bangladeshi resident produced documents to claim him, ending the standoff."
Despite the high-profile nature of the incident and circulating social media footage, the BSF Meghalaya Frontier did not respond to requests for comment regarding the event.
